MY REVIEW

“Charles was as drawn to the adventure of her as he’d ever been to anything. But it was a weak man who couldn’t control his passions.”

Retired from the military, Charles Heywood is determined to reconcile with his parents and obtain a piece of property important to his family history. But a chance meeting with audacious Kate Beresford in London upends all his peace. Convinced that Charles is the hero she needs, Kate pursues him determinedly. Is it possible that the one man she wants is the man she cannot have?

A sequel to Mimi Matthew’s Work of Art and Gentleman Jim, this book contrasts the spirited daughter of firecracker Maggie Honeywell and sophisticated St. Clare with the staid and sober son of sweet-tempered Phyllida and stoic Arthur Heywood. Unusual to most romances, the heroine knows what she wants in a hero and is determined to have him while the hero is reluctant at first to show any flickers of interest. Kate throws herself in Charles’ way repeatedly until he is forced to acknowledge the attraction.

But unfortunately, Kate’s father and brothers are less enthusiastic about the match and would prefer a titled gentleman for a talented heiress like Kate. Removing from Somerset to London, outspoken Kate must learn to wait on her hero and let him make the next move in the dance of courtship.

This unique story showcases memorable characters, excellent dialogue, and a tender romance. It provides both a charming window into the families of couples from the previous books and sets up the next book in the series well.

“He had many flaws, undeniably, but no one had ever accused him of failing to be a man of action.”
