MY REVIEW

Emily and her sister Cissy are imposters. Ever since the tragic death of their father, they have been deceiving their way through society, pretending to be relatives of rich, aged women so that they have a place to live. But when fortune turns, Emily determines that they will return to the home they grew up in and trick the “Devil Duke” into marrying the beautiful Cissy so that they can claim their beloved cottage on his estate.

When Emily runs into the Duke’s coachman at an inn, however, he discovers that Emily is not the lady she’s pretending to be. She reveals her plans to him, only to discover that he is not as trustworthy as she’d hoped. Secrets abound. Masks conceal true identities. And the fate of both Emily and her sister hang in the balance as Emily must discover whether she can love again after having her heart broken so long ago.

This Regency romance captured my interest immediately. The frame story of letters exchanged between Emily and a fay spirit of the woods was utterly charming. The misunderstandings between the two lovers were predictable, but so poignant to read about. I started this book much too late in the evening and had to stay up much too late to finish it. Recommended.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

She tried to get past him, but he blocked her path. He suddenly dropped to one knee in front of her, as if he were about to propose marriage.

“Wha-what are you doing? she stammered, out of her depth.

“It is perilous to walk around with loose shoelaces, especially in the stables,” he muttered, tugging at the laces and retying them tightly. “They’re torn too. You dragged them through the mud. There.” He gave them a final tug, but did not get up immediately.

Emily had frozen into a statue. What on earth was he staring at? Why was the hand still around her ankle? It was large and warm, covering almost the whole of her foot. And she didn’t think her feet were that small.

“You’ve got holes in your shoes,” he said softly, and there was an undertone in his voice that she couldn’t quite make out.
